USTC demonstrates long-lived ion-ion entanglement over 10 km, a quantum repeater building block

Researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China reported in Nature remote memory-memory entanglement between trapped calcium-40 ions over 10 km of fibre with a 550 ms lifetime, longer than the 450 ms needed to create it. They also ran device-independent QKD over the same setup.
